Studio - Summer 2011

I believe there are times, especially in the life of an artist, that you must take a few steps back to gain a new perspective of what lies ahead.

In no way do I mean stopping or moving backward but simply quieting the chaos of all the necessary distractions which have become expected of us. Websites, blogs, facebook, twitter etc (amongst a myriad of other technological requirements) insist we keep everyone up to date on how hard we work... what inspires us... when we succeed... when we fail...what we eat...when we manage to sleep...what we like...what we dislike... and of course, what we think of everyone else. Supposedly, all while trying to maintain a "normal life"- relationships, family, friends, business, health, etc. which may not be quite as easy as it appears to some. (props to those that can!)

Needless to say, it's a hard balance and creativity tends to get lost in this endless whirlwind. More importantly, the truth of why you are an artist to begin with can become blurred. Personally, I believe the only real requirement is to stay true to yourself. First priority is to create- genuinely and from the heart. The passion put into it will transcend in the work. IT will speak for itself. Your integrity and originality will show ...and it will pay off. (in many more ways than one)

This Summer, I made the conscious decision to be a bit more in tune with this need to quiet the constant buzz. I shut out the "blaring sounds" of the play-by-play present to listen a little closer to my future. (which has been loudly "knocking on the doorstep" ...and turns out, has a whole LOT to say!)

BUT...like Summer, my technological hiatus had to come to an end. So, on this first day of Autumn, I thought it only appropriate I start completely afresh with the incoming fall and I have plenty of good news to share. So here we go...

Whats in store this season?

* a brand new website and blog-

complete with high definition video footage of my most recent paintings and studio process

*preparations for upcoming shows and new galleries - including my biggest solo gallery exhibition to date (details to come)

and most importantly...

a fresh new perspective!

If you haven't had the chance to see the current show at my newest gallery -Lanoue Fine Art in Boston, you'd better hurry! The Summer exhibition is only on display for 2 more weeks and this show is too hot to miss.

I'd like to say a tremendous THANK YOU to everyone who came out this past weekend and helped make my 2nd Annual Open Studio such a fun, successful event!

Despite the torrential rain that smacked steadily upon the red tin roof of my studio Saturday, I had a great turn out and all and all, a pretty incredible day! (Personally, I'd like to imagine the rain was mimicking a steady "applause" ;) and as far as the theory of wet weather bringing "good luck" goes, I think it's proven itself!)

I'm grateful to have met many new, incredibly inspiring people and greatly appreciate those of you who have continued to join me throughout the years. You brought your umbrellas, support and smiles and made all of the hard work and preparations worth every second.

I'd like to claim I took a break and went on some grand vacation after all of the butt-busting but alas... things have only gotten crazier and I'm welcoming the workload with open arms!

Since Saturday, the studio has morphed back into reality and is in full-force work mode. My tables have been wheeled back in and the walls suddenly have room for more. I've packed, shipped, delivered and installed all the artwork that has sold. Now, onto preparing for my next solo show in July.

Translation: Party's over. Back to work!

As I sit on my studio floor right now, I can't help but to feel incredible pride at the body of work that I've busted my butt creating these past few months.

THIS is what it's all about. Sitting back, taking it all in, knowing I've accomplished this goal I set so high for myself...and most importantly, LOVING the work and the fact I have the opportunity to share it with all of you in the space it was created!

Crunch Time

TICK...TICK...TICK... the count down begins! Only 2 days left until I happily swing my doors open to the public for my 2nd Annual Open Studio Show!

Yes, I'm in FULL freak out mode right now but luckily I work fantastic under pressure. (and believe me...the pressure is on!)

50 pieces are hung and ready to be photographed today. Preview appointments are being booked for today and tomorrow and work is already being put on reserve. Oh yeah... and I'm the crazy woman who's STILL painting! (how can I not??)

I'll be posting many of my new pieces for preview and reserve purchase later today and tomorrow, so keep checking back.

With that said, I'm rushing back to work now. Every moment counts!...

...studio late night...

This week has been one of those weeks that I've woken up every morning, like a child on Christmas Day, giddy with anticipation and racing back to the studio for a fresh new look at the work I created the night before.
Yes- I've had many days like this since completing my studio in 2009. (There's something intensely motivating about creating in a space you've created yourself!) But this week??...this week has been extraordinary!

Everyday my inbox has been full of love from folks around the country sharing their compliments about my work and space or just dropping me a note to let me know I stirred up a little sumthin' sumthin' in them. To me, that is a jolt of creative adrenaline that no cup of coffee could ever conjure up!

Simply put... Its pretty damn inspirational to inspire!

Thanks to everyone that has added to this positive buzz. It's been the perfect catalyst to get me all fired up in preparation for my upcoming 2nd annual Open Studio on June 11th which I welcome you to join me for!

I'm excited to share that once again, my work will be featured in the prestigious MassArt Benefit Auction taking place in Boston this Spring.

Although I have been a contributing artist to the MassArt Auction for the past 8 years, this is the second consecutive year my work has been selected for the distinguished LIVE auction section of this highly respected annual art event.

Chosen from over 1400 pieces of art, only a hand full of work is chosen to be presented in the Live Auction, hosted by Karen Keane, CEO of Skinner Auctioneers.

My piece will be featured alongside nationally and internationally renowned artists such as Chuck Close, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Jenny Holzer, William Kentridge, Fred H.C. Liang, Michael Mazur, Abelardo Morell, Nick Nixon, and Jack Pierson.

'Above and Beyond' Expectations

In 2008, I began a series of small encaustic paintings incorporating vintage textiles, photographs and letters, various metals, lace, glass, paper, nails, bark, wire... and a countless array of found objects.

Each painting was individual and intuitively painted. My intention was to spark recollections of the often overlooked details in nature from an unconventional perspective, using texture, neglected everyday objects and forgotten mementos of the past.

I started off with a small grid of nine 6" x 6" paintings three years ago. This series has since exceeded my expectations. ('above and beyond' what I ever imagined ; )

At the close of 2010, I created the 400th piece in this series, most of which have sold so far.

In celebration of that, I'm featuring a few of my favorites from this series with a close up peek into the details not always noticeable at first glance.

So, it seems only appropriate that the new year is starting off with a whole lot of white! A "White" show, a new white series of paintings and very, very white weather!

Along with the two feet of snow now piled so gracefully outside of my studio doors...

*I've also started a new series inspired by the landscape that has so beautifully entrapped me (photos coming soon)

*and to top it off, today I'm shipping out the very white "Soliloquy #9" to a native New Englander living in sunny California (ironicly cruel? or romantically nostalgic? I cant decide! ;)

White is in the air! Both literally and symbolically... and I'm embracing every new second of it! (for a few more weeks anyway...)

The past few years have been quite a whirlwind for me but 2010 has won the title of the "whoa-did that just happen?!" year of all years. I feel, for myself, I need to reflect for a moment.

I'm lucky to have experienced some of the most amazing memories of my life this year, including accomplishing one very significant, very personal life goal ...

The completion and public opening of my studio/gallery.

This little fantasy I had planned and obsessed about in my head since I was a little girl became an actual reality in 2010. I finally had a place of my own... to paint what I wanted, when I wanted, as much as I wanted and for as long as I possibly wanted...and best of all I could finally show it and share it with anyone I wanted, anytime I wanted and that's exactly what I did!

"If you build it, they will come" ... has held so true for me in 2010. I'm incredibly grateful to those of you who have visited my studio and supported me this year. YOU have made this all possible.

As I sit in my studio right now, It still feels like a dream. I love this space and everything about it, from it’s creation, to what I continue to create inside of it, but mostly for creating inspiration in others that they can accomplish the same... with hard work, determination and passion, and for that alone, I am thankful for 2010.

You'd think that would be enough to make anyone feel accomplished? Well, 2010 proceeded to get even better. Just a few of the highlights from my year filled with surprises ...

I won the 2010 NH Spotlight Award for 'Outstanding Abstract Artist of the Year' (and gave a very nervous acceptance speech to an 800 seat auditorium. Something I thought I would never have the courage to do, I did... and survived!)
My work was featured in the Prestigious MassArt Live Auction, presented on stage in front of 600 collectors alongside the work of world renowned artists (I sat in the balcony holding my breath while bidders fought over my piece. 2 long minutes later it sold and for well over its retail value. I exhaled.)
I created my first 4' x 4' encaustic painting (a scale I had previously been incredibly intimidated by. It has now become my favorite size to work in)
I sold my first $4000 painting in 2010 (in 1998 when I sold my first $400 painting, I cried...then paid off my college credit card. This year I cried and installed a credit card machine. :)
I completed the 400th painting in my "Above and Beyond" series which I began in 2008. (350 which have sold so far. I've loved each individual piece and I feel this series is now complete.)
I had 2 solo shows of all new work (both of which were top selling shows in both galleries and worth every bit of stress. I cant wait for the next!)
I was featured internationally in multiple magazines, blogs and websites including the cover of The Boston Globe's- G Style Magazine.
Most importantly, I worked everyday of 2010 as a full-time artist, in a space I love, with my two dogs Joni and Marley at my feet. (and not many people are lucky enough to say that)

These, amongst MANY other deeply personal experiences, have made 2010 a year I will never forget.

I'd like to take this moment to thank each and every person who has helped make this year so fulfilling and memorable for me. My amazing friends and family, everyone who has visited my studio or purchased my work no matter how big or small, those who have taken the time to simply email me with kind words or share my work with others and every individual who has entered my life bringing inspiration, positivity, love and support (and sometimes a little wine and chocolate too ;) You know who you are and I thank you.

I hope 2011 brings everyone as many memories and hope for the future as 2010 has brought me!

In Lieu of an Open Studio...

I've had many people inquire if I will be hosting another Open Studio before the Holidays.
Well...I seriously contemplated it.
December 18th was my projected date....
Invitations were designed and ready for print....
Plans were in the works.
Sadly, after considering the chaotic timing of the season, I decided against it. (I know, I know. boooo)

So, in lieu of an open studio, I'm very happy to offer studio visits throughout the month of December!

I love studio visits since they give me the rare opportunity to meet with patrons individually, dedicate the time needed to talk about my work and process or simply help them select the perfect piece of art to bring home. (Plus, its a lot less crowded and the floors aren't nearly as sticky from spilled sangria ;-)

This is one of my most recently completed pieces which I planned on premiering for sale as my newest Featured Painting. Fortunately, it sold before I could even upload the photos.

Although this particular piece is no longer available for purchase, I decided to keep it as the featured painting to show an example of my work custom framed.

Normally my work is presented without a frame but this is simply a personal preference. Some prefer a more finished look but I must admit to having a serious love affair with the delectable confectionery-like drips that are so uniquely characteristic of wax.

With this is mind, my custom floater frames are designed specifically to show the textural edge of an encaustic painting while still giving the piece a clean, finished presentation. I hand construct each using 2" deep x 3/4" maple hardwood, stained or natural and priced individually. I offer framing on all work in studio.

Studio Sweet Studio

I recently returned from a two week trip to beautiful Northern California where I purposefully (yet very inconveniently) unplugged for what felt like far too long.
Although I had severe separation anxiety from painting, my studio, my dogs and dare I say it.. my dear, sweet iMac, it was well worth it.
During my slightly disconnected jaunt, I celebrated my birthday...witnessed my friend and amazing fellow artist, Jhina Alvarado, get happily hitched... and saw inspirational friends and landscapes I haven't seen in years. It was the perfect jump start to what's looking like a truly fabulous Fall!

I fell a little behind but thankfully I'm back in the studio and working on a new series of paintings which I'm very excited about and can't wait to share with all of you. Please check back soon!

Obliged and a bit overwhelmed

Its taken me a couple weeks but it's finally sinking in. People like my little studio in the sticks, almost as much as I do!

I had a hard time believing it at first. Email after email in my inbox everyday from folks across the country, saying the most lovely things about my studio, my artwork even my homemade bed! Frankly, I was shell shocked!

This very personal work space I put my heart and soul into, that I built from the ground up and filled with all my "stuff"; art, paint, supplies, tables on wheels, wax, books, mementos, antiques, the little oddities that inspire me, tables on wheels (wait, did I say that again?)...people really dig! (who knew?!)

Nearly a hundred comments on Apartment Therapy referring to it as "stunning"..."breathtaking"..."perfect"..."the epitome of lovely" (really??) and now apparently I have "stolen it from someones dreams!" (How cool is that?)

I'd just like to say thanks again for all the wonderful words people are sending my way, but most importantly, those who have supported my artwork and have found IT to be the most inspiring part of the space.

After all, this studio was built with my art at the very heart of it, a place for me to work and create, to spend my days inspired and (hopefully) inspiring others.

I'm excited and flattered that The Boston Globe has asked to feature me in an upcoming cover story for their G Style section!
I'm looking forward to my interview and photo shoot with them this week!

Apartment Therapy

Since my studio was featured on Apartment Therapy this past Tuesday , I've been overwhelmed with the most amazing emails and comments. I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone who has taken the time to express their kind words about my studio and especially my artwork.
I love working in this space that I had such a huge part in creating myself. It's been a wonderful, life changing experience and I feel very lucky I was given the opportunity. I hope you will take a look back through my blog so I may share more of it with you.
I'm extremely flattered and humbled that so many of you love my studio as much as I do. I'm grateful to work, live (and play!) in it everyday. What I've put into it, physically and emotionally (and also esthetically) is a constant inspiration to me. I'm incredibly happy, that through AT , I got to share it with so many new people who appreciate the amount of work and passion I've invested into it and the work I create within it each day. I'm truly thankful for all of your support!

In honor of my Studio Grand Opening

In honor of my Studio Grand Opening on Saturday, May 8th 2010, I thought I'd share a little visual flashback of this labor of love I've worked so hard on for the past 15 months.
I'm incredibly proud to finally celebrate the completion of my studio and to share it with all of you! This very personal project has been a beautiful and prolific culmination of literally a years worth of 'blood, sweat and tears'. Okay, mostly sweat... but there was definitely some blood and well,... tears come with the territory of making your dreams come true through hard work and determination. Lots of tears!
So here it is... a recap on the process of my 'little vision' that has come to fruition; my constant oasis, my creative escape...my dream come true....my studio.

I'm honored and humbled by this recognition and I would like to take this opportunity to share my sincerest gratitude to all those of you who were a part of this award and awesome evening!

I'm honestly still in a bit of shock. As a visual artist, its not often that you are given an opportunity where you can so publicly (and in person!) thank everyone who has supported your work and made an honor like this possible.
On Thursday evening, when my name was called, I cautiously made my way up on stage and literally fell into a sea of emotion. From anxious to excited to downright petrified! As I stared into the blinding lights of the beautiful 800 seat Portsmouth Music Hall, I felt such an overwhelming emotion of gratitude pour over me. I made the conscious decision not to get all "Sally Field/Halle Berry" on the audience and before I fainted, cried (or worse!) I simply thanked the wonderful visual Arts Jury that selected me (amongst the 4 other talented, nominated artists I admire and respect),... my awesome support system of friends and family.... and ALL those that support the arts in every facet.

In retrospect. if I could have mentioned each person, individually, who has impacted my work and life... inspired me, intrigued me, pushed me, challenged me, encouraged me, supported me or simply gave me a nudge (or a fat piece of cheesecake ;) when things weren't looking so "inspirational", I would have. I hope you all know who you are but, once again, I'd like to send out my immense love and appreciation for ALL of your support!!

I had the pleasure of attending the MassArt Auction Preview Party Thursday evening and I have to reiterate that this is truly the best, most impressive auction yet! I've posted a few "sneak peak pics" but you truly need to see this amazing show and exciting LIVE auction in person. Please join me for this awesome event TONIGHT!

The MassArt Auction - This Saturday, April 10th!

Get your tickets now! This Saturday, April 10th, the MassArt Benefit Auction opens its doors to kick off Spring with one of Boston's most exciting art filled evenings of the year.

I always look forward to this annual auction with great anticipation but this year more than ever. My painting "Confluence #4" will be featured in the distinguished LIVE auction section of this highly respected, juried art event. My piece, along with 37 works by nationally and internationally renowned artists such as Jun Kaneko, Shepard Fairey, William Wegman and Ambreen Butt (and many more) will be presented in the Live Auction, starting at 8 pm and hosted by Karen Keane, CEO of Skinner Auctioneers.
In additional, 200+ works will be available for bid in the silent Auction opening at 6:30 pm.

This is a show NOT to be missed! I'll be attending both the Auction and Preview Reception, Thursday, April 8th. Please come out and join me for this truly impressive evening of art and help me support the next generation of creativity and the best (and only public!) art college in the nation.

I just received word that I've been nominated for
"Outstanding Abstract Artist of 2009"
at the 16th annual "Spotlight Awards".

I'm truly honored by this nomination and hope you will join me (and cheer me on!!) when the winners are announced at this very special Awards Ceremony on Thursday, April 15th 2010.

Thank you so much to fellow artist (and all around great gal) Jhina Alvarado for featuring me as her "Favorite Artist of the Month" on her lovely blog: "Rising Artist".

Jhina is a San Fransisco based painter who not only shares my obsession with wax but my deep appreciation and love for resurrecting new life into the forgotten found objects of the past. (let's just say we're both aggressively sentimental in the "contemporary-vintage" school of thinking ;)

Jhina has been a amazing supporter of mine ever since meeting her last year at the 2009 International Encaustic Conference. I hope you will take a moment to check out her awesome review of my work (and very cool blog) at....

Crunch Time

TICK...TICK...TICK... the count down begins! Only 2 days left until I happily swing my doors open to the public for my 2nd Annual Open Studio Show!

Yes, I'm in FULL freak out mode right now but luckily I work fantastic under pressure. (and believe me...the pressure is on!)

50 pieces are hung and ready to be photographed today. Preview appointments are being booked for today and tomorrow and work is already being put on reserve. Oh yeah... and I'm the crazy woman who's STILL painting! (how can I not??)

I'll be posting many of my new pieces for preview and reserve purchase later today and tomorrow, so keep checking back.

With that said, I'm rushing back to work now. Every moment counts!...
